SEMrush is SEO software for agencies

10-second breakdown:

SEMrush is a search engine platform specialized in competitor keyword research, backlink analysis and generic SEO audits. Recommended for companies looking to improve their organic rankings, monitor paid advertising campaigns or advance their link building efforts.

SEMrush is used in small (0-50 employees), medium (51-1,000 employees) and enterprise companies (1,000+ employees).

The good:

SEMrush is one of the more reputable and common competitive research tools in the industry. The platform provides reliable keyword ranking and volume data that you can use to improve your organic search strategy.

It’s an excellent competitor analysis tool, enabling you to dive deep into other websites and identify key SEO elements.

Adwords campaigns are more easily manageable with SEMrush – you can use it to optimize them and ensure a bigger ROI.

The bad:

SEMrush is not one of the better options for seo audits. It may not be as powerful as other tools when it comes to page grading and website crawling.

How it works:

As a keyword research tool, SEMrush can help you identify the best performing keywords in your industry. Depending on the popularity and search volume of keywords, they are updated daily, weekly or monthly. SEMrush uses a live update algorithm to update its 26 databases.

For every keyword, you can choose a geographical area and the tool will show you its organic search volume, search trend, paid search volume and cost-per-click, the cost-per-click distribution, related phrases and keywords, organic search results, ads copies and ads trend.

To analyze changes in rankings, insert your website URL and SEMrush will display new keywords, lost keywords, as well as improved or declined ones. You can see the organic changes in keyword rankings, detailed with search volume, cost-per-click, traffic data and overall trend.

Keyword rankings reflect essential changes in your target audience’s behavior, that you need to be aware of in order to continue to deliver relevant content and products.

You can also see which keywords your competitors are using. The tool will break down their SEO value and help you figure out the competition’s organic content strategy. These are the keywords that your target audience is actively searching for and that you’ll want to use in your own quality content.

SEMrush will display your competitors’ searched terms, grouped according to the domain’s position in Google’s and Bing’s top 20 organic search results. This organic competitors report will also display the competition level for each website, natural traffic per website, and domains’ common keywords.

If you look at the competitive positioning map above, you can see your direct competitors, based on domains’ natural traffic and the number of organic keywords. For every keyword, you can view landing pages displayed in the SERPs, along with the entire web text. This will give you a pretty good idea of the type of content that performs well, so that you can optimize your own content.

Click on common keywords to see which are the keywords you’re trying to outrank your competition on.

You can compare up to three domains. SEMrush can also analyze your paid keywords’ performance for you and your competitors.

Every query can be targeted towards desktop users, or mobile users.

Another useful keyword research tool is the SEMrush keyword difficulty tool, that you can use to determine keywords’ difficulties.

SEMrush’s backlink tool is a reliable ally when it comes to identifying all links referencing your domain. The checker will conduct a deep link analysis, check referring domain’s authority and link types as well as offer a geographical distribution overview.

I find this backlink checker to be extremely effective. You can use it to identify all incoming links for a URL, domain, or root domain, their anchor texts, as well as to view the URLs and titles of linking and target webpages. You can also perform a backlink comparative analysis.

Each backlink analyzed is provided with a nofollow or follow note, to help you focus your link building efforts in the right direction. You can also see where your competitors’ follow links come from, and exploit those sources as well.

If you want to analyze your ads campaigns, go to the advertising research tool to see which keywords are performing best, what their positions are and how they’ve evolved over time. SEMrush will tell you how much traffic your ads brought and the costs that come with it.

Another tool is available for product listings ads. This can be a huge help for e-commerce websites in particular. You can use it to define your product listing ads competitors on Google Shopping and see their best performing ads. Find out how many keywords your ads have in common and estimate your competition’s spending to compare them with your own.

If you’ve also invested in video advertising, you can track your performance with SEMrush’s video advertising research tool, currently in beta testing. This is the platform’s first analytical feature designed specifically for collecting and analyzing data on YouTube in-stream video advertisements and channels.

You can use it to identify your top video competitors, study their campaigns and use this data to create even better ones.

Also in beta testing, the display advertising tool lists top publishers and advertisers in your industry, enabling you to see their display ads from different devices.

SEMrush’s top 30 report shows the best performing advertisers’ sites and their text and media ads, as well as the call to actions and the landing pages they’ve promoted, together with how many ad placements they’ve used.

Part of the projects suite, the website audit tool helps you identify and fix on-page issues related to internal and external links, anchor texts, meta content, broken images, error pages or duplicate pages. Basically all SEO issues related to crawlability, content, images, links, accessibility and coding, which will be classified as errors, warnings, and notices, so that you can prioritize them efficiently.

SEMrush also has a social media tool (you can see more social media tools here), as part of the projects suite. You can use it to track your social media activity, as well as that of your competitors, on different networks. That means social audiences, activity and user engagement, with historical data tracking.

SEMrush is an effective search marketing tool, especially when it comes to keyword research and backlink analysis. You can also use it to perform competitor analyses or to assess your current marketing campaigns, SEO optimizations and even video or display campaigns.

The tool offers reliable data, with a clean UI and a set of diverse tools, for every need.
