10-second breakdown:
Founded in 2003, Intelius has quickly become a leader in its field thanks to their dedication to keeping their customers in the know. In addition to identity theft protection, they offer a number of services from credit monitoring and alerts, background checks, people searches and reverse phone lookups.
The good:
Simplifying the number of products you subscribe to is important. To do that you’ll need to use services that offer multiple things you use and Intelius does just that. (For instance, employers may enjoy having their identity protected by the same company that performs their employees background checks.)
All three credit bureaus are monitored for sketchy events. This is incredibly helpful since there may be a lag in reporting in one or two reports. Time is of the essence with identity theft and the more indicators the better.
There is public record monitoring which is a plus for keeping tabs on things that aren’t directly related to your finances, but still involve your identity.
The bad:
There aren’t as many features with Intelius. Most other protection services are a bit more robust.
Since there are so many products, the focus of the company may not be solely concentrated on this offering.
How it works:
With an estimated 11 million identities stolen annually, protecting your identity is now more important than ever before. We go through great measures to protect our homes, cars and physical selves, our identity deserves the same level of protection. IdentityProtect is Intelius’ answer to identity and credit protection. Though not as popular and in-depth as their background checking services, the core of their company, they provide a minimalist but intelligent system that is more than capable of getting the job done.
Intelius offers service with a smile, their customer service continuously receives good marks with their considerate and helpful representatives on the support team. Where Intelius really shines is in their comprehensive reports that are accurate, easy-to-read and timely.
Due to its nature as a background check company, Intelius’ public record monitoring is far more extensive in comparison to its competitors. Examining 20 billion records annually, Intelius prides itself on their ability to gather public information. Records of your addresses, your relatives and associates, deaths and births, marriages and divorces, reports on property and nearby sex offenders can all be easily monitored through Intelius.
Other features that customers have come to appreciate is that they monitor your information for all three credit bureaus, and their ability to monitor use of your medical insurance card which not all competitors are offering, despite the fact that this is a growing area of identity fraud.
Intelius IdentityProtect is a single-tier service offered at $19.95 a month, with discounts for quarterly or yearly subscriptions. At only $8.25 a month for their yearly subscription, it’s one of the most affordable identity protection services on the market.
With their instant credit report and score, you can view and track your own credit score and even find out who else have been looking at your credit report. Credit and public record monitoring allow you to easily keep track of changes to your credit report and public records while getting alerts for any signs of potential identity theft. They also include social security monitoring, credit and debit card monitoring, bank account protection, address and phone number monitoring.
Intelius’ customers have 24/7 access to the fraud resolution experts on their customer support team who are standing at the ready to assist with urgent matters such as disputing frauds, canceling cards, and contacting the authorities. Naturally they are also there to help with general run-of-the-mill assistance as well, happily answering any questions you may have that aren’t covered by their extensive FAQ. Their support center can be only reached by phone, sadly no ticket submissions or live chats are available. Should the worst happen, they have a $1 million identity insurance to cover and damages incurred by an identity theft, and they’ll supply their ‘identity recovery kit’ to help you get back on track.
Intelius IdentityProtect is a strictly web-based service. They made sure that their website is intuitive, and user-friendly with clean layouts and interface so the faint of heart have nothing to fear. Their website has been wiped free of spam and worrisome ads – recently it been redesigned and divided into six major sections: your ‘Home’ page, ‘My Credit’ which displays your credit reports, ‘Alerts’ where you can find your archive of notifications, ‘Protection’ for activating credit cards and the like, ‘Public Records’ which will provide any publicly available information that Intelius could find about you, and lastly ‘Resources’ which displays the FAQ and other helpful resources.
Whenever any changes occur to the information that’s being monitored, IdentityProtect customers receive a prompt alert via email, keep in mind there is no option to receive alerts via text or call. Each alert is archived on the member portal of the website for easy access.
Intelius isn’t perfect, they leave out a few extras that other companies usually provide with their standard service. If you’re looking for all the bells and whistles, you may find that their service is lacking, even at the price point they’re offering. For example, Intelius can’t freeze your credit cards for you, should their service catch someone in the act of stealing your identity all they can do is alert you and you have to take it from there.
Everything being said, Intelius offers a great package that is especially impressive if you take into consideration the extremely low price point. If you’re looking for a great value for your dollar and a program that doesn’t need a degree in computer technology to navigate, Intelius is right up your alley.
