10-second breakdown:
Perhaps the most well-known antivirus suite of all, Norton Security Deluxe is a trusted and reliable brand name that hits a home run in protection while throwing in lots of extra features the competition can’t or won’t.
The good:
Security Deluxe just protects your devices well. From malware to phishing and everything in between, it performs. It’s been vetted by every third-party and independent study worth their salt and has come out with flying colors across the board. One of the best-known and functioning softwares around.
Purchase one “copy” of the software and you can install it on up to five devices, including smartphones and tablets. In fact, there are a large number of devices covered by Norton’s.
Security Deluxe has a very powerful firewall that will keep you that much safer when you’re rolling through the internet. Norton’s offers the protection you need in an ever hostel environment.
The bad:
There can be a noticeable drain on your resources. A trade off to the awesome level of protection.
iOS users don’t seem to be as well covered. Apple fans may want to take notice.
How it works:
Recently Symantec, the company behind Norton, combined nine different products into one single powerful security suite. They have since broken down their large product into three different packages. Although you won’t see all of the additional features in cheaper plans, there’s plenty to love at all levels.
Norton doesn’t participate in as many of the independent lab tests as the competition does. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, Norton makes a good point – many tests throw known malware at the antivirus program, but what good does that do? New viruses are invented every hour, and a real test of character is how well the security suite can detect and disarm new threats in the wild.
In that regard, Norton blows most competitors out of the water. They would have had a perfect score but a few false positives docked them a few points. Still, Norton Security Deluxe managed to smash new malware threats that baffled a lot of the competition. They also scored the highest result possible from one of the toughest testing firms out there, Dennis Technology Labs. The lab captures new, live threats from the internet then throw them at the antivirus programs to see if anything sticks. Norton scored an ‘AAA’ making it one of less than a handful to get a perfect report card.
The browser protection is best in class as well, so much so that many companies base their results on how well they stack up to Norton Security Deluxe. When put to the test, Norton is tied for first place when it blocked 91% of all malicious URLs. It would wipe out the infected file before it could be downloaded.
Norton led the pack with anti-phishing security, it was one of the very first to build it into their suite. As you would expect from a grizzled veteran, it outranks almost all other security suites and brought home the silver medal – losing by only a tiny percentage.
The reason Norton scores so well is because it has several layers of protection. The first layer of defense checks the URL against a known list of offenders and blocks it on the spot if need be. Unfortunately most phishing sites do most of their damage before they get blacklisted, so Norton also double checks regular websites for signs of phishing. If a site is brand new and hasn’t been seen by the Norton community just yet, they also pay closer attention which they dubbed ‘Scam Insight.’
Several antivirus programs come with a powerful firewall but Norton takes it to the next level. It automatically handles confusing popups like ‘Can XYZ.exe connect with IP address 5.5.5.5’ and tracks all network activity. It allows helpful programs through, pulls the rug on malicious programs and watches all unknown programs. If they display malicious behavior Norton’s ready and willing to pull the plug.
Norton Security Deluxe comes in three different packages; you will want to pay a little more attention to which package offers what features. Compared to the competitors, the lower tiers are much more bare bones, stripping out extra features left and right. On the plus side, Norton offers a unique guarantee – either they help you remove all problems or you get your money back.
The first package they offer is ‘Norton Security Standard.’ It’s limited to just one computer, either Mac or PC, and costs $34.99 for a one-year term with a discount if you decide to pay for two years upfront. The Standard package includes all of the essential protection features like live protection from viruses and their best in class browser protection but that’s about it, you won’t see any extra features.
For $5 more a year, the ‘Norton Security Deluxe’ supports up to 5 devices – you can use it on Android and iOS as well. It covers all of the protection bases but also throws in quite a helping of extra features. One interesting feature the competition lacks, Deluxe comes with an online portal you can use to manage the security of all devices you have Norton installed on. Need to tweak the parental controls of your kid’s smartphone? No problem, there’s no need to take the phone, change it right from the web.
‘Norton Security Premium’ comes with the entire kit and caboodle. It’s $49.99 for a one-year term and you can install it on up to 10 devices. In addition to everything that Deluxe offers, Premium brings additional parental controls, file backup (PC only) and 25GB of cloud storage to the table.
There’s a reason Norton’s name is so well known, they do great work for a reasonable price. If you’re looking for solid protection from a well known and tested brand, look no further Norton Security Deluxe has you covered.
