10-second breakdown:
Vivint’s goal is to help users to create a smarter home with intelligently designed products dedicated to simplifying your life, and the game-changing Vivint.SmartHome system manages that seamlessly. For those who favor more high-tech convinces this may be the must-have home security that you’ve been waiting for.
The good:
One of the best features from Vivint is found in their home automation. One of the best companies for techies looking to set up their house to be controlled through an app. Lights, cameras, and other electronics can be easily manipulated with “push-of-button” controls.
This security company also focuses on style with most of the equipment being minimally intrusive, made from quality materials, and it doesn’t look bulky and poorly designed. Another plus for the modern minimalist.
Internal monitoring is another strong suit. Most of the larger companies provide this, but there are some that outsource their calls and few do it with the level of transparency offered by Vivint.
The bad:
How it works:
Let’s say you’ve just purchased your dream home, the one you’ve always told your friends, family and coworkers that you would have one day. After decking it out with the latest and greatest in luxury, you simply can’t overlook the importance of a strong security system. The last thing you want is to leave both your home and yourself vulnerable to the unthinkable.
With high quality and superior home automation, Vivint steps in with their ‘smart security’ going beyond standard protection they also provide several services and products to help customers conserve energy and live intelligently by converting their home into a high-tech smart home.
While do-it-yourself installation is becoming quite common as a means of making home security more affordable, Vivint is not one of those systems. They offer professional installation for their house alarms and while this will come to a steeper cost, when the job is done you can rest assured knowing that everything has been set up properly. A few professional installers will come to your home to set things up but be mindful that they may try to tempt you into additional products as they’re paid on commission. It will be up to you to decide if you’re satisfied with your system as is, or if you’d like to expand upon your package, which you can do at any time not just when the installers are around.
Features that you can look forward to with Vivint include 24/7 monitoring and support as well as a free iOS or Android compatible mobile app letting you quickly and easily check up on your home anytime, anywhere.
A new feature that Vivint announced in 2016 is its integration with Amazon Echo. This will enable Vivint users to control their security system with voice commands. This opens up various possibilities like locking the doors, arming your system, adjusting the thermostats and even turning off all of your lights or just lights in specific rooms. Sadly you won’t be able to use it to find your remote control or car keys should you misplace them, but keep your fingers crossed for that in the future.
Vivint offers three ‘Smart Security’ packages to choose from, all of which come with a Lifetime Equipment Warranty enabling you to replace broken or faulty pieces within your system at no charge to you.
Beginning at the entry level, the ’Smart Protect’ package provides Vivint’s 24/7 monitoring service, their ‘SkyControl’ control panel with 7” touch display, three door/window sensors, a motion detector, smoke detector, key fob and yard sign. Stepping up one tier to their ‘Smart Protect & Control’ package makes things a bit more high-tech, keeping the same items as the Smart Protect package while adding on your choice of two smart home services.
Your smart home service options include a doorbell camera, a door lock, and a thermostat. HD video recording, outdoor video surveillance and garage door controller are other smart home services available as add-ons for an additional cost.
Lastly, their ‘Smart Complete’ package includes the aforementioned while letting you choose three smart home devices rather than two. The cherry on top of this package is the addition of Vivint’s ‘Space Monkey’ – a 1-Terabyte secure local cloud storage allowing you to automatically backup files to the cloud from any iOS, Android, Mac or Windows device. At 1-Terabyte you can store over 300,000 photos meaning that the shutterbugs of your family have no need to hold back during your next vacation thanks to the large, secure storage space.
You’ll note that each package seems somewhat basic overall and possibly not ideal for large homes with just three sensors provided, but no need to worry, this high-tech system is also highly customizable with various add-ons including additional door/window sensors, tilt sensors, small appliance controls, panic pendants, CO detectors, glass break detectors, and additional smart home devices. So it’s more than possible to build a more thorough and advanced system to suit your particular needs.
Browsing their website, you’ll find a lot of information listed, but some may be disappointed to discover that one thing not listed is the pricing for their various packages and add-ons. Vivian instead offers their phone number and welcomes visitors to request a quote instead.
Vivint’s modern, forward-thinking security system is generating a lot of buzz and for good reason. Their high-quality services and products are paired with an equally high price, but if pricing isn’t a concern Vivint is the ideal gateway for people who need to secure their home but are also looking to get their feet wet in the possibilities presented by smart home technology.
