Klout is a social media manager that improves your klout score

10-second breakdown:

Klout is a social media tool designed to help you grow your klout score and expand your presence on the web, focusing on sharing valuable content and tracking your online activity. Recommended for companies that want to discover new content ideas and track performance using social metrics.

Klout is used in small (0-50 employees), medium (51-1,000 employees) and enterprise companies (1,000+ employees).

The good:

Klout is an easy-to-use content platform that helps you focus your posts on the exact topics that you want to be known for.

It’s also a great way to monitor your Social Media activity and evaluate the contribution of each network to your overall digital presence.

Over time, you can see how you’ve evolved and optimize your activity to continue to improve your klout score. A high score can establish you as an influencer and connect you with the right people, expanding your network.

While it might be easier for an individual to have an idea of where they stand with their social media activity, for businesses this can be a really useful tool in benchmarking influence and social reach.

The bad:

When your score drops, the app doesn’t give you any insights into how to fix it. This feature which could come in really handy. It would simply say something like “Your klout score is stable over the past month, but has been falling recently. Try engaging more with your network and sharing different types of content to see if you can raise it”, but it gives no precise indications.

A lot of the perks are superficial or masked advertisements and to get them you have to turn into a real PR rep for that brand, so don’t get too excited about them.

Although Klout has disclosed how they calculate social influence, there are many voices out there who still feel like the final score is not a very accurate measurement and consider it highly susceptible to bots manipulations.

How it works:

If you’re an online specialist, this app can help you grow your network and your online influence. For entrepreneurs, it’s a great way to connect with your audience. If you’re simply passionate about a specific topic or industry, Klout helps you connect with like-minded individuals, allowing you to grow your passion and your influence at the same time.

After you’ve signed up, go ahead and connect all of your social media accounts, namely Twitter, Facebook profile, Facebook page, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn or blogging. Your klout score is updated daily. To check out your score history, click measure.

A quick tip – apparently they don’t have a visible FAQ section, so, if you need any help figuring out the app, you can visit their support page.

Ok, now back to connecting networks. It will take a while before your klout score computes, so be patient. After connecting your accounts, you have to select your topics of interest, or, as Klout puts it, topics of expertise. This means the industry where you want to expand your influence, adjacent niches, complementary interests etc. The more targeted your interests, the better chances you have of growing your klout score.

That’s because this influence you will gain is measured by the actions driven by topics-related content. Pretty straightforward right? You want to be the best guy/gal when it comes to IT recruitment, make sure you select the right topics and post the right things. Your klout score will be evaluated based on online influence on IT recruitment content.

To edit your topics, click on your profile. Earlier this year, Klout rolled out a new feature wherein it will highlight the topics in which the user an expert, based on context. Other topics without stars are simply areas of interest, as they were before the change.

Content suggestions are available here, as well as in the explore section of your dashboard.

Browse through a selection of recent content related to your topics of interest. You can share this content with your audiences on Facebook or Twitter. To your right, you have influencers suggestions – who to follow in order to increase your reach and your influence.

Similar to Hootsuite and Buffer, the app allows you to schedule content for future posting.

You have an overview of all scheduled content in the schedule section of your dashboard.

Another quick tip –  to create a new post or to view notifications, go to the upper left corner of your screen and you’ll notice the notifications icon, a bell, and the post creation icon (pretty easy to miss).

Analytics are available in the measure section. Here, you can see your klout score’s evolution in time, in a 90 days score history that points out the highest score attained in this timeframe as well as the lowest one. The graph to your lower right displays the exact contribution that each connected network has on your klout score.

Klout Perks are exclusive rewards given to content creators. They can vary from products, to special discounts and VIP access, depending on the topic/industry where the content creator has influence.

After you are a registered Klout user, you are eligible to receive future perks depending on your score, your topical influence, location, and other factors.  Make sure your age, location, and email is up to date in the settings section to ensure your eligibility for future perks.

When you earn a perk, you’re notified via email and in-app notification. If you’re interested in a very popular perk, you might be waitlisted until the company offering the perk can accommodate your request. To successfully claim a perk, you must click claim your perk in the invite email, your notification on Klout.com, or from your my perks section.

For brands and agencies, Klout has a business solution focused on earned media. The platform brings together known content influencers and brands to create sharable social experiences.

With a very simple user interface, the tool helps you curate and schedule content on your social networks, and also connect with industry influencers.

Try using Klout at least once, to get a sense of what it offers and how you can benefit from it. Find out what your online influence is and what your klout score is, and start growing it.
