SpyFu is a competitive keyword tool for digital companies

10-second breakdown:

SpyFu helps you research your competitor’s top keywords and ads, enabling you to see exactly how your competition is showing up on Google and other search engines, and optimize your own strategies. Recommended for companies looking to benchmark and improve their SEO and PPC efforts.

The good:

Seeing which ads perform best for your competitors is an excellent feature in this SEO tool. It also identifies lots of keyword ranking opportunities for both organic and paid traffic.

You can see how much competitors spend on SEO and PPC so that you can benchmark your own efforts.

The keyword research tool performs very well.

SpyFu has a very clean, user-friendly interface that makes it really easy to use.

The bad:

Sometimes the software can’t find certain websites.

Another problem is that some of the keywords identified have not been relevant or they had a very low search volume.

SpyFu is used in small (0-50 employees), medium (51-1,000 employees) and enterprise companies (1,000+ employees).

How it works:

When you search for a competitor’s domain, the tool will display a monthly PPC overview that includes organic and paid keywords, inbound click from Google (organic vs. paid), estimated monthly SEO clicks and their value in revenue.

The data may not be 100% accurate but it gives you a useful estimation of the volume of traffic that your competitors are enjoying. The overview also includes top competitors of the domain listed and their shared keywords, both organic and paid, in an overall market research analysis.

Then you have the top ranking keywords, followed by and AdWords history, inbound links and an organic keyword ranking evolution explained in a dynamic chart.

You can also use this tool to assess a new client’s online activity and come up with a data-based strategy to improve his rankings.

Now, as you go to the SEO tab of your dashboard, you start to see detailed data on the changes in organic keywords ranking, SEO clicks and revenue value. Here, you can also see which keywords have recently been crawled on the top page. You can see improved keywords ranks, lost keywords and newly added keywords as well as inbound links.

A more high-level but similar analysis is also performed for the competitors of the domain you’re assessing.

The shared organic and paid keyword (Kombat) feature will give you a glimpse into the keyword universe of your domain and its competitors, identifying core starting keywords for which all of them rank, missed opportunities that your competitors are exploiting and you should consider as well, and exclusive keywords that only you are leveraging at that time.

SpyFu will automatically group keywords, enabling you to filter them by volume, cost per click, SEO difficulty and cost per day.

The ranking history for the top 10 identified keywords gives you the possibility to interact with a dynamic timeline graph, showing the evolution of these keywords over time. Multiple filters are available for this graph, such as dropped keywords, new keywords, gained ranks and lost ranks.

Identifying inbound links that your competitors have gained can help you improve your content strategy by sharing and promoting similar content on those websites. The backlinks analysis will detail monthly monthly organic clicks for the domain, as well as monthly organic clicks for the page hosting the link. It also tells gives you the number of ranked keywords and outbound links.

Detailed SEO reports and PPC reports are available for download. You can also customize and brand these reports to send them directly to clients.

Next up is one of my favorite SpyFu tools – keyword research. You can use it to analyze a certain keyword for monthly searches (local and global) volume, cost per click, daily cost, click-through rate, ranking difficulty, advertisers and homepages using it as well as universal search in SERP.

The platform, like other top SEO tools such as Majestic and Ahrefs, also indicates related profitable keywords that you can add to your strategy.

In the advertiser history section you can see the most successful advertisers and their best ads used to rank for the keyword you’re analyzing, with detailed data on their performance.

Other features in the keyword research tab are a dynamic graph of its ranking history, a detailed list of backlinks using that keyword and a SERP analysis. You can also analyze a group of keywords, for a series of products, for example.

In the outreach module, the top lists section, you’ll learn which competitors spend the most on AdWords for their domains and which keywords have the highest cost per click, but also which ones have the best SEO performance in organic traffic and what the most popular keywords are. The tool also looks at which companies have phone numbers, emails, social media and blog features on their websites.

This module also comes with a business leads tool that can help you identify new business leads based on the industry they’re operating in and the keywords that they’re using, their location, AdWords budget, available contact info and technology.

You can use SpyFu to track your SEO and PPC performance every week on major search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo.

SpyFu is an incredible help in sizing up your competitor’s SEO and PPC strategy and its results. It gives you key insights into which keywords perform best in your industry, both organically and paid.

It’s also a tremendous help in organizing and monitoring your own PPC and SEO efforts.
